Review—Beautiful Chances by Alicia Rae
“Love could conquer fear. You just had to believe in yourself.”
How does one ever really conquer a fear of losing someone they care about when everyone they love has left them? Lily doesn’t, she runs.
After the tragedy of losing her entire immediate family in a horrific accident, Lily flees to get away from the pain, to forget that it’s all her fault. Grief and heartache drive her clear across the country in search of solace and peace. Coming to rest in Sanibel Island, Florida, Lily falls in love with the quaint town, seaside cottage retreats and warm, sunny beaches. In this place Lily can immerse herself into another world; through her writing and photography.
“I loved my family dearly only for them to be taken from me. I was terrified at the thought that I could open my heart again, and just as easily, lose someone dear. Life was unpredictable. I wanted to spare myself from any more heartbreak. My heart was at its limit, and it couldn’t endure any more sorrow without shattering completely.”
Spending her days soaking up the sun and typing away at her latest romance novel, Lily can almost push away all of the dark feelings she harbors deep within her soul…almost. Keeping to herself, maintaining a level of distance from even her two closest friends, Lily can never fully prepare herself for the impact of the brown-green stare from across the beach. Mmmmmm…yummy man, all strong and chiseled. Brown hair and a toned, defined body, Kyle Madison strolls right into Lily’s life. Little did either one know that a chance meeting on the beach would bring them to their soul mate.
“The man could make my heart flutter, my brain stutter, and my body shudder all at once. It was an enthralling combination.”
Knowing the immediate affect Kyle has on Lily only makes her more weary…except Kyle doesn’t take “no” for answer and he is determined to make Lily his; no matter how long it takes, he knows she’s worth it. Even with her inexperience (of course she is a virgin—and a fast learner), she has this effect on him; a connection that deep down, they share. Knowing his own past, he senses a sadness in Lily that he is determined to help her through. With his confidence and “alpha” tendencies, Lily doesn’t stand a chance. And when he gets close enough, or talks his sweet talk, Lily is putty in his hands.
“Lily…what you do to me…I can’t control it. Or explain it. But you are in my mind, my thoughts, even my dreams. You beguile me.”…”The first time I laid eyes on you, the sunset was just like this.” His fingers ran back and forth along my cheek as he smiled lovingly…”I remember the way the light glowed across your face. You were so beautiful. You just kept watching the sunset, looking lost in your own thoughts. In that moment, I know that I would never see or feel the same way about another woman as I do for you. And you look just like that right now.”
Looks like she’s not the only one completely taken off guard and absolutely smitten. *swoon* Their relationship progresses quite quickly (a little too quick I think) with the whole “love at first sight” feel to it. Demanding trust from a person she just met, and giving it so easily in return was hard to wrap around…and then the crazy appeared.
Mysterious letters, people, phone calls, vandalism…someone doesn’t like the choices Lily has made and determined to have revenge. Problem is…that’s all there is. Maybe more will come of it in the next book…
Okay, back onto Lily and Kyle; and their immediate connection on multiple levels. She’s damaged goods (or so she thinks), and she just knows that if she falls for Kyle, he will leave her too. Kyle, on the other hand, continues to soothe and reassure Lily that he is not going anywhere and that no matter what he wasn’t letting go. Together, this couple (even with the short time frame) are working on something solid. He shares more with her than anyone ever before, and she opens up to him about the things in her past that have plagued her for so long. Kyle helps Lily heal and finally move forward from her grief (no doubt, she’s kicking and screaming the whole way), reminding her that life doesn’t stop and she can learn to live in the moment again.
“I just take it one day at a time. My dad always told me, ‘You are doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing in that moment. Cherish it, and don’t rush it because it will soon be over.’”
So very sweet! This story has a little of everything; which means there’s something for everyone. A little suspense and mystery, a beautiful love story, a solid back-story (from both sides), laughter, tears, a jealous best friend (there is your triangle—except it isn’t, really), a crazy (which is the only loose end), an outspoken girlfriend, loving family ties, some steamy love scenes, and for the most part, a “Happily Ever After”. To say it was my favorite book ever? No. Was it good? Yes. Would I recommend it? Yes. It was a great foundation to build a solid series on, *wink wink* and I look forward to more.
