Nova Reed used to have dreams-of becoming a famous drummer, of marrying her true love. But all of that was taken away in an instant. Now she's getting by as best she can, though sometimes that means doing things the old Nova would never do. Things that are slowly eating away at her spirit. Every day blends into the next . . . until she meets Quinton Carter. His intense, honey brown eyes instantly draw her in, and he looks just about as broken as she feels inside.
Quinton once got a second chance at life-but he doesn't want it. The tattoos on his chest are a constant reminder of what he's done, what he's lost. He's sworn to never allow happiness into his life . . . but then beautiful, sweet Nova makes him smile. He knows he's too damaged to get close to her, yet she's the only one who can make him feel alive again. Quinton will have to decide: does he deserve to start over? Or should he pay for his past forever?
Dream Cast (Jessica Sorensen):
This one is seriously a tough one and I can never find anyone that matches who I see in my head, but here’s the best I could come up with
"One, two, three. One, two, three. I can’t seem to get the counting and the obsessing out of my head. I’m always drowning in it and the memories of that god awful day that I can’t quite remember, but can’t quite forget. It owns me. I just want to feel alive, but all I feel is numb. But then I meet Quinton. He makes me feel alive and for the first time in my life, I can breathe."
Jessica Sorensen is my queen of Swoon - I adore her writing and the way she is able to make me feel just with the power of her words and this story is no exception in fact I am happy to say I love the direction she took in this read - no matter what genre of topic Jessica is always able to deliver.
Nova Reed is a very damaged character she has literally been shattered due to the tragic events in her life, after the suicide of her boyfriend Landon she was literally broken her way of coping? OCD tendencies to the extreme. Summer break is upon Nova and she is going home but this means facing things she she is not ready to - All she is left with is questions and no way of having them answered; Why did Landon leave her behind, was there anything she could have done?
"People say that time heals all wounds, and maybe they’re right. But what if the wounds don't heal correctly, like when cuts leave behind nasty scars or when broken bones mend together, but aren't as smooth anymore? Does it mean they're really healed? Or is that the body did what it could to fix what broke...” "
Quinton is like also lost and haunted by his past, he cannot let go of the death of his girlfriend and blames himself - Why did he get a chance at life when it was his fault his girlfriend does in that car accident? Quinton numbs his pain by numbing his emotions and taking drugs - the grief he feels without them is too much and he will do anything to have his emotions locked away.
That Summer Nova goes home she never expected to meet Quinton - and never in her wildest dreams did she think she would meet someone just as broken her herself. Can two broken people help each other to heal? or are they just too far gone?
Nova slowly begins to feel things again but she cannot get rid of the sadness she see's every time she looks Quinton in the eyes, she know's he never meant to kill anyone but can she convince him that it wasn't his fault and help him to move on? Slowly they both begin to come out of the darkness they have surrounded themselves in but will they ever fully be able to move beyond what has happened in their pasts?
This is a heartbreaking story that will captivate you as a reader, you will feel for the characters - I know there where times where I wanted to jump into the page and tell them everything was going to be okay. I am probably one of the few people who does not mind a cliffhanger - If this means I get more of a fantastic story then I am all for it and when it comes to Jessica's books there is always so much more she is able to give and I will always be here to literally lap it up.
5/5 stars for this emotional and raw read.
