Mia Ryan was on the path to make all her dreams come true. Her life was everything she wanted it to be; until one fateful night changed everything – leaving her broken and without direction. Nearly a year later, she still has little faith in anyone or anything. Desperate to reclaim her life’s ambition, she takes an unexpected offer that promises to solve all her problems. But as Mia moves forward, she’s faced with obstacles she couldn’t have foreseen. The biggest of them lies within the mystery of Ethan Fitzgerald; a man who affects her like no other, but who she should avoid pursuing, at all costs.
On a mission himself, Ethan Fitzgerald didn’t care who he pissed off on his road to fulfill his mother’s dying wish. He relied on himself, and was closed off to the world around him – until Mia Ryan walked through his door. Normally one to avoid messy emotions, Ethan’s world is turned upside down by Mia, and he can’t seem to get enough of her.
There are lines you can cross that will change the course of your life forever …
“I knew in my heart that being a journalist was all I ever wanted for myself. Then last year happened and it felt like my dreams were light-years away. This was an opportunity to get back into that world. As great as it all sounded, I couldn’t ignore that it was a little dirty to spy from the inside for my own benefit.”
After a year spent picking up the pieces of her devastated life, Mia Ryan is presented with an opportunity she can’t refuse. Problem is, when things seem too good to be true, they usually are…
Against her better judgment, Mia implants herself back in her old stomping grounds, this time in a company known to be shady, just never proven. She never imagined the man she would be working for would bring her back to life…in every sense of the word. Or that he could be the enemy.
“Mia, whatever happened today, you’ve got to let it go. If you’re going to get what you need for Harrison, you can’t connect with this guy.” “I know. The universe sure has a wicked sense of humor.”
And after her job is secured, both of her jobs actually, the real game of cat and mouse begins…Mia just has no idea what the actual prize is.
“You were right that first day Mia. The universe has a f***ed up sense of humor to bring someone like Ethan into your life. Please try not to do anything stupid with him. Something tells me that only more heartbreak will lie ahead if anything happens there.”
And so it does…there is an undeniable attraction between Ethan and Mia that both fight (her harder than him) but eventually realize that one true cliché: The heart wants what the heart wants. And their hearts speak volumes over their minds, no matter what is not being said…and there is plenty.
“Mia, what you’re going to have to ask yourself is what you’re willing to live without. You can’t have what Harrison offered you and Ethan. You’re going to have to figure out which choice doesn’t leave you with any regret.”
This is one of those books that seems incredibly long to get to a simple point. Now, usually when I read books like that I am bored to tears and often finish just because I’ve vested so much time, I have to know the outcome. Well, this book was NOTHING like that! Although wordy, it kept me completely engaged and I honestly felt like I was watching a soap opera or evening drama on TV. It played out so well, leaving nothing to chance in my minds-eye and I can truly appreciate what the author conveyed in each and every word. The Irish roots in the city played on my heartstrings, the friends that had become family, the hot alpha male with a sweet and tender side, the element of suspense because the book is a cliffhanger and I’m still scratching my head because I have NO IDEA what just happened; all things that I loved about this book. I honestly want to skip the next books on my list to read because I NEED to know what happens next and October feels too far away! I truly enjoyed being swept away in Ethan and Mia’s story…I just hope the ending is not their end!
