I was ruthless.
I was feared.
I had sacrificed. Myself. Her. Everything...
Living in a world where I was worth more dead than alive was a choice. I was a bad man, never claimed to be anything else. I’ve done things I’m not proud of. Seen things that can’t be unseen. I’ve caused pain that I can’t undo.
It was all my choice.
Every decision.
Every order.
Right and wrong never mattered.
Until her.
She was under my protection, until she became my obsession.
But who was going to save her...
From. Me. The devil himself.

Fate brought us together. Destiny destroyed us.

“Go stretch again, cariƱo,” I ordered in a dominant tone. Nodding to the barre.
“I’m fine,” she stubbornly replied. Shaking her legs and arms out. Getting back into position, looking at me through the mirror.
I cocked my head to the side, arching an eyebrow. She narrowed her eyes at me, but begrudgingly listened. I pressed play, allowing the melody to once again take over. She placed her leg on the lowest barre, making her ass stick out in my direction.
Tempting me.
She closed her eyes, needing to get lost in the music, wanting to push away all the negative thoughts, already feeling discouraged. I stood, taking off my suit jacket. Rolling up the sleeves of my collared shirt as I stepped onto the hardwood floor. I slowly came up behind her, catching her off guard.
She froze, turning around, opening her eyes. Peering up at me through her lashes. “What are you doing?”
I leaned forward against her ear, grinning. “I’m helping you stretch.” Getting down on my knees in front of her.
Her eyes dilated. The feeling of disappointment replaced with nothing but lust. She placed her arms out to the side, resting up against the barre, supporting her weight. I grabbed her ankle, lifting it up in the air, rubbing along her leg as it was fully stretched, before setting it on the lowest barre. Running my other hand up her side, easing her over toward the extended leg. She understood what I was doing, reaching for her ankle, stretching. Standing back up, bringing her arms above her head, I caressed along her leg again, casually turning her torso so her leg was still placed on the barre behind her.
Her breathing hitched as I touched her all over her lower body. My lips softly kissing the inside of her thigh to where she wanted my mouth the most.

Review:
So, I can honestly say I didn't want to like this book. I struggled with the beginning and had to set it down multiple times because I internally rolled my eyes more often than I'd like when reading a book...especially one by an author I adore (and have LOVED all of her works) and with a book that has gotten so many rave reviews. It left me feeling...disappointed.

But, I did pick it back up and ultimately I'm glad I did. While struggled with some of the verbiage (ie. over use of quite a few phrases) and the language/content at such a young character age, I loved the outcome of the story. Some of it still rubbed me a little wrong (which you'll have to read it in order to know what I'm talking about--no spoilers here), but I understood where and what the author was saying/doing with her story. I love how she tied all of her series' together with just one book, how she gave us a little glimpse of what's to come with her Good 'Ol Boys, and that VIP is still going strong.

So, with that said, here's what I got from El Diablo.

"Your enemies couldn't hurt you if they didn't know what you're feeling. What you're thinking. It was the code of life."

Alejandro Martinez had a rough go of life once he realized it wasn't the smoke and mirrors he thought it was...growing up in a Mafia family never is. No child should have to face what he does at a young age, it changes him. Hardens him. Ultimately turning him into the one person he despised the most. El Diablo.

Fast forward many many years...

"Every Devil needs an Angel. And she was mine.

He's watched her every day since before she was born. He's protected her just as long. What he didn't do was keep his distance...he couldn't. The pull was just too strong, an undeniable connection with an age-gap of about twenty years. Love was never supposed to be a part of the equation. Too bad destiny had bigger plans...plans even the Devil himself didn't see coming.

This story is complicated. That's the best word I can come up with. It's coming of age, but not. It's suspense and violence, but it's not. There's a romance entwined within these pages. It's all of these things, some I can't even pinpoint, and it's ornate...there is a lot going on. A long time line. Separate lives melded together yet split apart into their own stories. El Diablo is an intricate tale, one where you see some things coming a mile away and some hit you out of nowhere. Even with slow start, it turned out better than I thought it would.

I look forward to the next ride she has planned with Mia and Creed...the little snippet she laced within the pages of this story definitely have me curious.
